4WD Tours / Offroading
A journey with the team at Maniototo 4WD Safaris, run by a fourth-generation Maniototo farmer, John Mulholland, is a journey of discovery.

You escape the hustle and bustle of city life into a whole different world. A world of rugged mountain ranges, fertile farmlands, interlaced with the scars of 1860s gold mining and abundant waterways.
John and his team provide a unique experience in a land of contrasts and far from the tourist crowd. And all in the comfort of a rugged four wheel drive, a Landrover Defender.

4WD Outback Safaris offers the Historical Goldfields Tour, the Majestic High Country Special Tour and Custom Tours, such as farm tours, conference tours, photography tours or flora and fauna trips. All you need to bring is sensible footwear, warm clothing, a camera and plenty of film or memory cards. Depending on the trip, 4WD Outback Safaris will also provide light meals.

Curling
The ancient Scottish game of curling has been a central feature of the Maniototo since the late 1870’s, the first reported game 6 July 1878. Long cold winters made work difficult and Curling provided a way to pass the time. The traditions and etiquette of curling which were diligently observed have become part of the folklore of Central Otago.

Curling is a sport enjoyed by both sexes and by all ages. It is a true lifetime sport, instilling team spirit and respect for one’s opponent, any discrepancy being amicably resolved amongst the players themselves. The traditions of curling strongly emphasise fair play and proper etiquette on and off the ice. It is a sport where beginners are warmly welcomed into more experienced company – curlers are keen for others to share their enjoyment!
